Music Video Junkie Week: No Doubt, Nelly, Jeffree & Madonna

It took 11 long years of patiently waiting, but one of the greatest bands ever is back, gracing us with their iconic presence. No Doubt, fronted by the gorgeous Gwen Stefani, have returned with the lead single off their new upcoming album. “Settle Down” is a six minute reggae masterpiece that just screams traditional No Doubt. Kicking off with a beautiful instrumental intro, the song succeeds due to Stefani’s top notch vocal performance and a catchy chorus that gets stuck in your head after just one listen. If the song was not already a great gift in itself, the band released a colorful music video to go along with the fun track.

After Stefani ventured off for a couple of years to have a successful solo career, the group came back together to record new music and that moment is celebrated in the new visual. Right off the back, viewers would notice the use of bright colors, sort of anime inspired, even Stefani’s Harajuku girls make a lovely appearance. After 11 years, No Doubt’s comeback is well worth the wait. The music video is a real sight to see and the song will surely be a hit for them. The track has already cracked the top ten of the iTunes charts and will certainly make a splash on Billboard’s Hot 100. Is “Settle Down” the No Doubt single you were waiting for?

September 18 will be an amazing day for music! Many new albums will be released on that epic day including Nelly Furtado’s long awaited new English record, The Spirit Indestructible. The Canadian artist recently unleashed the album’s official second single, the title track, after the disappointing response to the unique lead single, “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)”. The new single is a step up from the previous offering, but not as pop/dance sounding as the tracks from her last album Loose. The song contains an extremely strong message of empowerment and inner strength. A weird “AEIOU” chant is thrown in, but I kind of like it.

While I have been enjoying the track for a couple of days, the music video made its grand premiere yesterday and it is nothing less than stunning. Furtado is seen singing on a stage while a cute little boy is playing the piano. Things then change for the better when she is shown singing the lyrics from the top of a snow covered mountain top. Nelly is beautiful and the video really enhances her features. It may be my favorite aspect of the entire video. The song may not be Nelly’s greatest offering, but it does the job for me. Nelly’s vocals have always soothed me and “Spirit Indestructible” does the same. Hard for me to say if this will catch on though.

Jeffree Star needs to hurry the hell up with JIS Virginity EP… Ok I got that of my chest early. My Konvict princess released an unexpected treat for his fans a few days ago, maybe to help tide them over. While surfing through Twitter I came across a link to the official lyric video to what I assume may be the artist’s next single. “Blow Me” is an extremely vulgar track, not for the faint of heart, but I enjoy every second, especially the saxophone-beat and production. Star may have incorporated the dreaded “f” word, the word that the gay community frowns down upon, but I can overlook that for now. The verses are very catchy and continue with the heavy pop sound Star is venturing into.

The lyric video is a fun little treat that is all about Star’s party life. The artist is shown singing the song as the camera pans to gorgeous close ups of the artist’s flawless face. Shot in documentary style, Star is seen moving through numerous clubs as he meets with fans and has a good time. As some of the lyrics flash across the screen, Star is holding machine guns and doing a little booty dance towards the end of the visual. Too hilarious and cute! Star radiates beauty and fierceness and this entire video just emphasizes that fact. As I said, I like the song, I have been a Star fan for a while now, but I do not know if it is the smartest choice for his new career path. We will see how this goes.

To be honest, I’m just going to say it now, Madonna’s MDNA era is sort of lackluster. First we had the terrible lead single “Give Me All Your Luvin’”, then “Girl Gone Wild” underperformed and now my favorite track off the album, “Turn Up the Radio”, recently received a very boring music video. I am waiting for the Queen of Pop to do something right with this record. I do not think she is even trying anymore. “TUTR” is a wonderful song, I love the message behind it and I feel it would have fit in perfect with Confessions on a Dance Floor. It is pop, it is what the artist should be releasing and it will probably be one of my favorite releases of the year.
The five minute music video is a whole different story. Except for the first minute or so as Madonna is seen being stalked and surrounded by the dreaded paparazzi, the rest is extremely uninteresting. Yeah of course Madonna looks gorgeous throughout, as if she is aging backwards, but that can only please me so much. Madonna looks like a pimp picking up hot guys and hookers from the side of the streets, throwing them in her car, hoping to have a good time. Fast forward to the end, having fans running after her, screaming her name, is a little vain. Madonna fans: all I am saying is that the perfect single got a video treatment that does not match the track’s power. Maybe next time M!
