I Won't Stop Wearing These Weird Shoes to the Gym - gearpatrol.com Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:57 AM PDT Thanks to an old college injury that I didn't give enough time to heal, my back is particularly sensitive to poor form in the gym. Up until this point, the fixes I've used have encompassed a near-obsessive focus on body positioning, lots of foam-rolling, lying on tennis balls and, now, these alien-looking shoes called Skinners. Their makers tout these not-quite-sneakers as being a sometimes replacement for athletic shoes. Promotional videos show them being worn in airports, on trail runs and hikes. I did none of these things while wearing Skinners, and frankly, I'm a little skeptical as to how well they would hold up to hard use. Essentially, they're a thick synthetic sock with a grippy, almost asphalt-like rubber bottom. They're washable, incredibly packable and offer an unparalleled connection between your feet and the ground. That's not ideal for trail running, in my opinion, but when it comes to leg day? I'm hooked. To be able to firmly plant my feet on the ground while lifting has given me a better sense of balance and has helped me fine-tune my weight distribution. In turn, that's led to marginal but noticeable improvements in my form, resulting in heavier lifts. Now, wearing traditional shoes while deadlifting feels clumsy, like trying to untie a knotted string while wearing winter gloves. Sure, I could alternatively wear no shoes at all, but I'm not particularly keen on walking around my gym barefoot (and I'm nearly positive that my gym wouldn't even allow it). What's more, the bottoms of my feet aren't quite as grippy as the rough rubber bottoms on Skinners, which matters when doing something like split leg squats. Skinners recommends wearing its footwear with thin ankle socks, but I didn't take that advice. They're more comfortable to wear sans-socks and washing is simple enough. All you have to do is turn them inside out, throw them in a mesh bag and put it in the washer on a gentle cycle with the rest of your clothes. The only real drawback here is the price. Skinners provided Gear Patrol with a sample pair for review, and while I genuinely like them a lot, the nearly $60 asking price for something that is essentially a sock feels a little steep. But if you, like me, really give a damn about getting those small but noticeable improvements in the gym, it might just be worth it. Get To Know Cruelty-Free Footwear Brand, COVET SHOES - Forbes Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:48 PM PDT Jennifer Marks is all about kindness. And she likes to spread kindness with her own brand of animal cruelty free footwear, COVET SHOES. Not only are they kind, they're cool and pretty darn sexy too, with a line that consists of stilettos, block heels and mules designed to empower, but not at the cost of animals. And her customers are more than customers, they're apart of the COVETGIRL Community, the best gang of women who of course support cruelty free fashion but they also support each other, while promoting kindness along the way. Felicity Carter: What was your first fashionable memory? Jennifer Marks: From as young as I can remember, I always LOVED reading fashion magazines. Growing up, to me, there was nothing better than picking up the latest editions from the shops and reading them front to back. FC: How, when, why did you get into the industry? JM: I got into the fashion industry as a teenager. I always loved shopping, so when I landed a high school internship at a shoe shop, I couldn't have been happier. I always had a love for shoes, but the love quickly became my passion. I wanted to create a capsule wardrobe of shoes for women, rather than fashion-forward shoes that likely have a one-time/one season use. I wanted to create staples, simplicity and forever trends. I've spent years being surrounded by endless amounts of beautiful and unique shoes, but it was the classic favorites I always return to. Confidence: shoes never made me feel fat, ugly, uncomfortable, etc. It was always an outlet where there was no self-judgment Mental health: We sell shoes, but we care more about the women who wear them. Shoe sizes rarely change, even when your body does. FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic? JM: Simple feminine silhouettes in neutral colours. Feminine, effortless and warm. They're the shoes that live in your car because they go with EVERYTHING. They are PERFECT for dressing up jeans and a nice top for drinks with the girls or dancing the night away in at that wedding you've been waiting for. Not only can they be worn all night, they are also perfect for your Sunday brunch look because they will take you through your entire day, no matter what you're up to. FC: Who is your customer? JM: Our customer is the girl who gets her confidence from what she's wearing. They're happy, confident, inspiring, kind, & empowered shoe-loving women. FC: What are the cornerstones of your company? JM: All-inclusive - it's not about the Insta-model, it's not about their size- it's just about who they are and we want to make them feel included Kindness - A community of women supporting women, advocating kindness, and inspiring others to lead a life they love Empowering - We empower our wearers to create their own personal style. We're a brand for women, by women, and we believe that women can be kind, supportive and can lift each other up to celebrate their individual beauty, independence, and power. Longevity - We choose feminine and simple silhouettes to ensure our customers get longevity from their purchase. With neutral colors and desirable materials, their shoes won't be out of style next season or next year, they'll be wearable for years to come. FC: Tell us about the process and materiality... JM: All our shoes are designed by me in Australia. The styles are inspired by my own lifestyle and wardrobe. As I mentioned above, I've spent years being surrounded by endless amounts of beautiful and unique shoes, but it was the timeless essentials I always return to. I love high heels, but having them be wearable is important to me. I will always choose a comfortable heel height (for a high heel) and will always make sure the slant isn't extreme so the foot remains comfortable for a reasonable period of time. If I can wear them all night then they're a winner! Materials are always neutral, wearable and of high quality. I personally choose every element of every style before sending off the designs and specs to our factories. I sample repeated until they're perfect and won't sacrifice quality or fit. Only once they meet my standards are they then put into production. We make a limited number of pairs and we don't repeat styles. Once they're gone, they're gone. FC: Currently which is your favorite piece and how do you wear it/them? JM: It's hard for me to pick just one! One of my current faves is Bella. I love slipping them on with a pair of ripped jeans to elevate a casual girls lunch look or pairing them with tailored pants and a blouse to wow at a meeting. FC: What are your immediate and long term goals for your company? JM: To partner and continue to partner with more with like-minded organizations to help spread our message. As I said before, shoes are important to me but I care more about the women who wear them. I want to continue to build our kind, empowered and supportive shoe-loving community, so they too can continue to inspire other women. I know shoes won't change the world, but the COVETGIRLS who wear them will. And as Marilyn Monroe once said, "give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world". We couldn't believe this more! Shop the brand at COVET SHOES. |

Posted: 28 Oct 2019 04:15 PM PDT Getting through airport security is painful enough. On top of slow-moving lines and the anxiety of making your flight, there are also bathroom products to separate out, laptops to remove, and spare change to excavate from your jean pockets. The last thing you want is your shoes holding you up, too. In a minefield of variables, your airport shoes should hit three consistent buckets. They need to be comfortable, so lines and long walks to the departure gate don't give you aches and blisters. They need to be slip-on—i.e. laceless—so that removing them at security takes no time. And they need to serve a wider function for the trip that awaits on the other side of the flight. Keep reading for seven of our favorite men's slip-on shoes—all tried and tested—that will help get you through the airport a little more smoothly next time. All products are independently selected by our editors. However, if you buy something through our affiliate links, we may earn a commission. 1. Salomon, S/Lab XT-6 SoftgroundClimbing shoes—and Salomon's specifically—remain the sneaker trend of 2019: just ask Rihanna and Dev Hynes, who both appear to live in theirs on the road. There are a number of reasons we love Salomons for airport security. They're incredibly cushioned, slip on and off easily thanks to the brand's patented Quicklace system, and because they're built for summiting mountains, they're more than equipped for whatever you wish to throw at them on the other side. Buy Now: $205, ssense.com 2. Vans, Classic Slip-On SneakerStrongly recommended for all flights to Hawaii and the West Coast, there's not much more that needs to be said about these classic skater shoes—you've likely owned a pair at some point in your life, they slide on and off with ease from the second they're out the box, and they've been built largely the same way since 1977, with a price point that really can't be beaten. Buy Now: $49.95, nordstrom.com 3. Clarks, Wallabee BootUnchanged for decades for a reason, Clarks' historic Wallabees live at the intersection of comfort and style, with a quality leather build that guarantees they'll only fit you better with time. The slip-on boot version is great for airports and planes, especially: The leather keeps toes warm, and the high ankle coverage makes an overly air-conditioned airplane cabin a non-issue. Buy Now: $149.95, nordstrom.com Blundstone, Chelsea BootBlundstone boots can handle anything, from a sudden downpour in Copenhagen to a run through the terminal to make your flight. The wide, rounded toe on the standard version previously meant the only thing Blundstones couldn't handle was a formal event, but the Chelsea Boot solves all of that, with a shape that transitions seamlessly, wherever you're headed. The Blundstones also gain added points, like the Clarks, for their ankle protection. Buy Now: $176, nordstrom.com 4. Allbirds, Wool LoungersNot only are they all over your Instagram, Allbirds are also known for making shoes that feel like mattresses. Their new wool slip-on loungers pop on and off with ease, and are also sturdy enough for when you hit the ground on the other side and want to start exploring. They're also entirely machine washable—just be sure to let them air dry. Buy Now: $95, allbirds.com 5. Sebago, 'Classic Dan' Penny LoaferThe shoes that say "I deserve to be in this airport lounge." The Penny Loafer is a classic men's shoe, that once broken in really isn't all that different from a Vans slip on when it comes to comfort and ease of use. Sebago has been the go-to penny brand in the U.S. for decades, offering the lowest price you can pay for a pair that will still last you more than ten years. Oh, and there's an added bonus: wearing them as your flight shoe means there's no need for extra dress shoes to take up precious packing space. Buy Now: $160, amazon.com 6. Arc'teryx, Konseal FLFor these alone, we're breaking our laceless rule. Arc'teryx are best known for their industry-leading raincoats and windbreakers, but their shoe offerings rarely get the appreciation they deserve. Because they're built for climbing mountains, the Konseals are more than equipped to handle whatever hikes and walking tours await you on the other side of your travels. Despite their laces, they still come off with ease, and their Vibram soles offer unparalleled grip, whether of the terminal floor or the trails of Macchu Picchu. Buy Now: $164.95, amazon.com |
