Paloma Faith's "Leave While I'm Not Looking" - Single Review

UK starlet Paloma Faith is the true queen of gut-wrenching, heart-shattering, tear-inducing love ballads and just like her brilliant yet overlooked "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" release earlier this year, the talented songstress is rightfully serving the piano-driven "Leave While I'm Not Looking" as her next official single off the deluxe version of her last studio album. As always, Faith does not disappoint.

Since gaining impressive exposure and buzz with "Picking Up the Pieces" back in 2012, Faith has not really deviated from her successful power ballad formula yet. That's not necessarily a bad thing when she keeps cranking out stellar, award-deserving performances one right after another. The newly announced single is no different, as the singer pleads to her lover to ease the heartache by leaving when she's not paying attention.

"Leave While I'm Not Looking" is a soaring number, guided by soft violins and pounding drums, setting up the scene and vibe to let Faith's always impressive vocals do a bulk of the work. We have come to expect these dramatic, sometimes-over-the-top stories from Faith, and the new single does carry a progression similar to her past efforts, but it can all be overlooked once you hear the pain in the artist's voice. "If this is goodbye, then you're gonna leave me shattered, you're gonna take away, only everything that matters," she belts on the Diane Warren-penned verses.

The single does everything right. You have a insanely talented vocalist sharing a heartbreaking story of a deteriorating relationship that comes to life thanks to solid songwriting and a chorus that takes everything to another level. The vocal variety and range showcased on the number is a testament to Faith's ability to convey emotion, the notes she is able to hit during the hook make the track a must listen all on their own. "Leave While I'm Not Looking" may not be the best release of 2014, but it will leave you wanting to applaud.
